Microserfs Paper
What is the first thing that comes to mind when someone says what generation are you from? Most people don’t even know what generation they are from, and when you tell them what generation you are from they give you a dazed and confused look. I was born in 1990 and I am considered to be from the “First Digital”, “Echo Boom”, “Generation Y”, or “Millennial” generations. These are just four of the different names that represent the people born from 1981-1997. Even though these names are all different, they all represent the same group of people and even though all of them have a similar meaning they also have their own meaning.
First Digitals is one of the four titles given to the people born from 1981-1997. This title has the clearest meaning of the first kids to have grown up with an extensive amount of technology at their hands. According to Born Digital, a book written by John Palfrey and URS Gasser, “First Digitals are coming of age and our world will be reshaped in their image” (Impact…). The First Digital generation has been raised with the internet and digital media. The new up in coming workforce is the first to be raised on the internet and with digital media. Along with the text messaging, teleconferences, and many other technologies, the next generation is the best at multitasking and doing any source of work on the internet, you could say they are the most computers savvy.
Echo Boom is another of the many titles given to the generation from 81-97. This term is more thought to be recognized with the size of the generation more than anything, at 80 million strong the Echo Boomers are one of the largest generations ever recorded. Echo Boomers are also talked about when you talk about colleges and the effect they have on them. Echo Boomers socialize and work around the clock, “Today's students are less bound to the old-fashioned notions of what they have to do and when to do it,” says Ungar. “They have a different time clock and are staying up later at night” (Shaping…). To accommodate for this schools now have opened their libraries later and the University of Michigan Dearborn is open 24 hours during finals week. “The library should be a place where you feel comfortable enough to fall asleep, wake up, get a cup of coffee or tea and resume studying at any time,” says Ungar (Shaping…). Echo Boomers have made this transition to the 24 hour schedule possible for everyone, without them it seems like none of this would have happened.
Generation Y is the third generation on my list that is thought of as a cohort of individuals characterized as Generation X on steroids. This is also mostly recognized when you talk about the Internet, iPods, MySpace, and Facebook. This generation grew up with the internet and is the most technologically advanced generation so far. Generation Y has colleges going crazy with the increase in the student body, “College admissions offices, employers and marketing companies are going into a frenzy over Generation Y” (Understanding…).
The Millennials is the last generation on my list that is thought of as the generation of the new millennium. They are talked about more when talking about jobs and how they are taking over the job scene. “It's graduation time and once again we say ‘Stand back all bosses!’ A new breed of American worker is about to attack everything you hold sacred: from giving orders, to your starched white shirt and tie” (The…). CBS.com, the Washington post, and The New York Times all made comments about how the Millennials are now coming in and taking over the job market, becoming bosses and kicking out the Baby Boomers who are now pushing 50 years of age.
The Millennials, First Digitals, Echo Boomers, and Generation Yers are all for the babies born in the 1981-1997 era. All of these have something to do with technology, and all of these are recognized in the work place as more and more become part of companies to start a new era. There are events in history that every generation is known for remembering. There are many events that have happened in this generation’s time that will be remembered, “The fall of the Soviet Union and the First Gulf War serves as the midpoint and the 9/11 terrorist attacks as the endpoint. The current Iraq War is the war this generation will likely identify with along with other recent occurrences such as Hurricane Katrina, the Indian Ocean Tsunami and the Columbine High School shooting. Other important events include the death of Princess Diana, the return of Hong Kong to China, the O.J. Simpson trial, the Oklahoma City bombing, the Monica Lewinsky scandal, Y2K, anthrax scares, the SARS epidemic and the avian flu” (Understanding…). I happen to remember only some of these events because I was born in 1990, and I believe the ones that I will remember the most are the Iraq war and the 9/11 terrorist attacks. These stick out the most because they were very recent and affected me emotionally as I think they did to everyone. Another thing that sticks out about this generation is the video gaming that a great majority of this generation does, the book Microserfs refers to this when the narrator , Daniel, says, “I want one of those keys you win in video games, that allows you to blast through walls and reach the next level-to get to *the other side*” (149).

The Golf Show

Complete Show Length in minutes: 5 minutes 30 seconds

Episode 1: Topic: The game of golf Intro Music clip: Title: The wonderful game of golf Minutes: 30 seconds
Intro: Good Things About Golf Minutes: 2 minutes
Hello, I am Norman Orsette, and this is my podcast, “The Golf Show”, where I will be explaining the game of golf in its entirety. The game of golf can be complicated and stressful but also can be relaxing and simple. Golf is sport that is played worldwide and is very easy to learn. Golf is something that if you learn young you can be great and even if you don’t learn it young it’s so easy that you can learn at any age. Golf is one of the few sports that you can play for the rest of your life because it doesn’t involve a lot of stress on any particular body part. Golf is a sport that I’ve grown up playing and love it more than anything, it’s a non contact sport that requires a strong mental ability but allows you to have an enormous amount of fun.

Segment Music Clip: Title: The wonderful game of golf Minutes:30 seconds
Segment: Some rules and ways to learn golf Minutes: 2 minutes 30 seconds
Golf has many rules that make up the game, the basic rules are; you cannot pick up your ball until it is in the hole, you must count every stroke, you must start every hole from the designated location, and you are only allowed to have 14 clubs in your bag at a time. This is only a brief overview of the rules, there are many more especially when you get competitive in this sport. There are many ways to try and learn this fun and exciting game of golf. You can take lessons, which is probably the easiest way to learn it, or you can just go with it and learn as you go. After talking to Joe Johnson, golf pro and certified golf teacher, he told me that to get into this game and really enjoy it you have to put your heart in it and be very dedicated. He told me that there are tons of courses and ranges that offer lessons and provide great services to you throughout the country. He works at the Golfsmith store in canton and has been my trainer for the past year, he really knows his stuff, anything you ask him about golf he pretty much has an answer for it. If you are looking to get serious in this wonderful game of golf then you should look on the internet for the closest range or course and take action on taking some lessons or just getting out playing. Once you start you will love this sport so much that you will want to play every day.

Littering
Littering in parks is a problem in all of the United States. Since I cannot focus on all of the United States, I will focus on the surrounding Detroit area. The local and national parks in the surrounding Detroit area are suffering from problems such as littering, but this is a problem that can be solved. Littering can cause many problems such as land, air, and water pollution.
One problem that many local and national parks in the surrounding Detroit area face is land pollution. Land pollution is mostly caused by littering. Littering is one of the biggest problems that cause land pollution but it is one of the problems that can be taken care of with dedication and a little force. Many local parks have restraints on what you can bring into them but rarely are they enforced and many parks have places to dump your trash or recycle your bottles but people are just lazy and don’t fear the threat or respect the park security. This is why laws should be enforced more and people need to be fined for their actions. Fines are already very large but rarely are they enforced. If the state would step in and force the law I believe that land pollution could be reduced considerably. If we do not take action soon all the activities that we enjoy on a day to day basis will not be possible because the land we live on and enjoy will be so polluted that it will be dangerous to go around it.
Another problem that not only parks face but also the whole world is air pollution. Air pollution is created from many things such as car exhausts, industry smoke, and simple things like littering. Littering is probably the easiest thing out of all of these to try and fix even though it is still not very easy. By reducing littering you will reduce the everyday items just lying around our streets and in our parks that give off all the hazardous fumes that cause air pollution. By reducing littering you reduce air pollution, therefore create a better environment not only for humans to live in but all life. If we could even reduce littering by a small percent each year it would make a huge difference in the long run and even though it would be nearly impossible to totally stop littering it would make a tremendous improvement in our environment and make for a healthier world to live in. So if we can help our parks out and keep them litter free it will not only help them out but it will help out our whole country.
Water pollution is also a huge problem that our local and national parks face. Water pollution is probably the worst type of pollution because nothing can survive without water; almost everything has something to do with water. Almost all local and national parks have a river or body of water that runs through them. Littering is like the second leading cause of water pollution. If we could reduce littering it would be a huge step toward cleaner water. Even though people may not litter in water it still affects the water, because even though the garbage may not be near the body of water its harmful materials eventually make it to the water because of runoffs and sewer systems. The hazardous materials go along the sewer systems or runoffs and wash into the rivers or bodies of water and pollute them. By reducing littering it will help reduce pollution and create a cleaner water system for our country.
If we reduce littering it would not only make our national and local parks look better but it would help reduce the three most common types of pollution; water pollution, air pollution, and land pollution. This would be not only be a huge step towards a cleaner environment for the surrounding Detroit area but for our whole country.

My visual composition is about protecting and cleaning up the Rouge River. I am promoting this to high school students because I believe that they are the future and can decide to help promote a cleaner river system for their kids and for their kid’s kids. We have to start this project now and with the help of the youth we can do wonders.
I am trying to advocate for a cleaner river system in Michigan, the Rouge River, and am asking high school students to help. I believe they can help the most and help promote the biggest change in our problem of pollution. Today’s day and age is growing fast and if we can get them to help with our problem it will help our cause grow with them and make our solution to pollution that much easier. If we can get enough students to help we can cover more zones of the river and make our effort that much more effective. I believe that my visual composition is going to help draw the attention of young people because it explains a lot not only about the river but also about how pollution affects us and the wildlife. I believe that high school students out of anyone would want to control their own future and if they help now they have the chance to decide how our river system ends up. Another informative part of my visual composition are the pictures, they show the river at its worst and at its best, I believe that this shows young people that if we don’t act soon on stopping this pollution it could really get out of hand and start affecting more than just the areas it surrounds. I believe that only this information should be efficient enough to give young people ambition to help out their community. And the goals I talk about in my visual composition are not hard to reach at all, they just take some time so if we can get any help from some high school students I think that our goals will be reached especially for our city of Dearborn Heights.
Our goal of helping out our river system is dependent on the youth of Michigan, and I believe they will come through because if I didn’t think they would then I wouldn’t be targeting them to help out the most. With the strength of our youth and the potential of my project I believe that this can turn into something great and that’s why I am putting so much effort into this project, all I need is a little help to make this happen, so I am counting on the youth of Michigan to give me a hand.

I would like to advocate for cleaner water around my neighborhood, by stopping the dumping that has been going on. My audience will be high school students because they are the future and can make an impact if they start now. I would like to propose that we stop the dumping and find new ways to get rid of the waste, by doing this it will help out not only human life but every kind of life around us.

In this capture of my desktop I am involved in many things. One thing I am doing is my difficult composing task which was writing a comment on my MySpace page. Another window I had open was my Ctools page on my web account for school, I was in the assignments file looking over my comp 106 assignment. The last web page I had open was Espn.com, I am almost always on this web site, it is one of my favorite sites to go to because I absolutely love sports. Seeing my screen as a photograph was very interesting, you really don’t realize what’s going on until you actually take the time to look and this photo made it much easier to do so. I believe composing changes shape in digital spaces by being in different forms, you can find composing in many different forms on the web and just on your basic desktop. I believe we can better understand the digital composing processes by using them more and searching to find new ways to use them.
